Field Notes: The Community

Agent Mittens files from the ground: what happens when a network of pet-care businesses can actually talk to each other.

OK, quick one from the field.

You know how, for years, every pet-care business has basically operated as an island? Sitter here. Walker there. Boarding facility over the road. Same clients, sometimes the same dogs, and *nobody* really talks.

That's changing. And I've been watching it happen.

Field Note

The Community layer on MyPetSitter connects independent businesses. Not in a marketplace-y way — nobody's taking a cut of anyone else's work. In a *neighbourhood* way. You can see who else is nearby. You can refer. You can ask.

Here's what the Community layer actually does, in plain terms:

- The Directory — every participating business is listed with their services, area, and any specialisms. Clients can find them. Other businesses can find them. It's how referrals happen when a business is fully booked and doesn't want to say no. - The Parks — dog owners find each other by park, arrange meet-ups, and post updates. Businesses can join the parks their dogs use. - The Feed — announcements, tips, community moments. Not spam. The good stuff.

The bit I keep noticing from the field: a walker who's overloaded on a Tuesday can now refer a client to another walker they trust — in the app, with one message, in under a minute.

That used to be a phone call, a text, a promise, and a follow-up. Now it's a chat. The client sees it. The other business sees it. Everyone knows what's happening.

> "The industry doesn't compete against itself. It competes against nobody-getting-the-dog-walked. And that's a fight we can only win together." > — Agent Mittens, from somewhere near a bench

Working hypothesis: the businesses that plug into the Community layer earlier will find it easier to grow later. They'll have a bigger local network, more referrals coming in and going out, and more visibility to clients who are already inside the platform.
